Feb 18, 2010: Bumpers and Diff-Drives and Bases, Oh My!
You may have noticed that we've made a few changes to our beloved CoroBot. The first is that we have added a choice of base styles. The venerable 4WD skid steer base is still available, though we have moved to a machined and anodized aluminum base. We have also added a two wheel (well, three if you count the caster) differential-drive base, which would give you an easier time turning in place. We've also upgraded the drive motors that go into all of our CoroBots - more than double the torque of our old motors.
For those of you who are interested in the bases but not the full CoroBot, we can take care of you, too: just take a look at our products page.
Making these improvements to the base has allowed us to change our sensor package, too. CoroBots now ship standard with a front bumper, covering the forward portion of the robot's chassis and the front wheels. The 4WD CoroBots also have an option to include a rear bumper. To make room for the bumpers, we've had to remove the fixed IR sensors on our robots. I'll have to admit, they weren't a favorite of ours - the fixed front and rear pointing IR sensors just didn't turn out to be very useful.
Finally, we've started shipping CoroBots with slightly larger decks. CoroBots used to mount a lot of their electronics on two 8.5 x 11" decks fixed above the base. We've now switched to 10 x 12" decks. That doesn't sound like much, but it yields almost a third more mounting space. Best of all, we managed to do this without extending the robot's footprint - the decks extend out to the ends of the tires instead of stopping a bit early.
We hope you're as excited about these changes as we are!
